Animation vs VFX: Which Course Should You Choose?

By Reliance Animation Academy UltadangaPublished Updated 6 min read

Quick answer: Animation creates characters, worlds and movement from scratch. VFX adds or changes things in filmed footage. Choose animation if you love characters and stories. Choose VFX if you like solving visual puzzles on real footage. Both use some of the same software, so you can switch later.

Animation and VFX overlap, but the daily work is different.

Students ask us this every week. The two fields look alike from outside. Inside, the daily work is different.

This guide explains both in plain words.

What is animation?

Animation makes things move. You start with a blank screen. You build a character, a scene or a whole world.

Today most animation is made on computers. Britannica describes computer animation as a form of animated graphics using computers. It has replaced hand-drawn and stop-motion work.

There are two main kinds:

  • 2D animation: flat, drawn movement. Think cartoons and explainer videos.
  • 3D animation: models that move in 3D space. Think animated films and games.

What is VFX?

VFX means visual effects. It adds or changes images that a camera could not capture on set.

Most VFX starts with real footage. Artists then remove wires, add explosions, replace skies or build whole cities around actors.

VFX and animation overlap. A creature in a live-action film is both. A VFX artist places it in the shot. An animator makes it move.

How do the jobs differ day to day?

An animator spends the day on performance. You ask: how does this character walk? How does she feel?

A compositor spends the day on realism. You ask: does this shot look real? Do the light and colour match?

Both jobs need patience. Both need an eye for detail.

Which one has more work?

Both. They serve different buyers.

Indian films now spend real money on VFX. The FICCI-EY 2026 report, as summarised by AnimationXpress, says tentpole films put 25% to 30% of their budgets into VFX and post-production enhancement. Mid-budget films put in 10% to 15%.

Animation also serves series, ads, games and explainer videos. The same report notes that the animation sector shrank 6% in 2025. So choose a course that builds a strong portfolio. That matters more than the label.

Will AI change both fields?

Yes, in some tasks. The FICCI-EY report says AI cut workflow time by up to 40%. For rotoscoping, the savings ran from about 20% on action films to 55% to 65% on sci-fi, fantasy and horror.

This changes the work. It does not remove the need for artists. Learn the core craft first. Then learn the AI tools.

Which should you choose?

Answer these five questions.

  • Do you like inventing characters and stories? Choose animation.
  • Do you like making an impossible shot look real? Choose VFX.
  • Do you enjoy drawing or modelling? Lean animation.
  • Do you enjoy working with light, colour and tracking? Lean VFX.
  • Still unsure? Start with a shorter course. Then step up.

Frequently asked questions

Is VFX harder than animation?

Neither is easier. Animation needs strong acting and timing. VFX needs technical accuracy and a sharp eye for realism. The harder one is the one that suits you less.

Can I switch from animation to VFX later?

Yes. Skills such as lighting, colour and software knowledge carry over. Many artists move between the two.

Do I need to draw well for animation or VFX?

Drawing helps 2D animation most. For 3D animation and VFX, observation and software skill matter more. You can build drawing skill during the course.

Which pays more, animation or VFX?

Pay depends on the role, the studio, the city and your skills more than on the label. Check current ranges on trusted job portals before you decide.

Which course should a beginner start with?

Start with the field you enjoy most. Any 10th pass student can join most of our programs. No prior animation or software experience is needed.
